Doesn’t matter how fit you are… doing something new hurts!!

Posted on: October 28, 2008

I consider myself pretty fit. I exercise every single day, at least one combat class per day, as well as 2 or 3 weight workouts per week – and it’s only about once every two or three weeks I’ll actually take a day off. My heart rate monitor has a function that tests your fitness level (assigning you an OwnIndex – a measurement that predicts your maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max]) and mine was in the “elite” range so yes all this combat is keeping me pretty fit.

However, the weekend just gone was a long weekend here in NZ (Labour Day) and I went away for a bit of a break, and as a result I couldn’t get to any classes for two days. No biggie, I figured I’d keep my fitness up by doing some running. So I went on two runs on Sunday totalling about 12k (7k on a treadmill in the morning and a 5k bush run in the afternoon), and one yesterday which was about 7k or 8k. Only thing is today I got up for my 6am combat class and could barely walk! I actually had to apologise to the class beforehand for my lackluster technique as my quads are so sore I could/can barely kick at all!

Funnily enough once the class started and I got a bit of blood pumping through them they weren’t so bad. The exact same thing happened to me when I first started BODYPUMP. I was so sore after my first Pump class that I was hobbling around afterwards for over a week!

But, it did get me thinking about maybe adding a bit of variety into my exercise regime. Right now the only variety I have is doing different releases in each combat class 🙂

I’m definitely going to keep up the running now I’ve started, especially now we’re coming into summer here, running outside is a definite option… besides, I want my body to get used to it so I don’t have to go through all this pain again! The moral of the story seems to be that no matter how fit you are, starting a different form of exercise hurts! Anyone else experience something similar or I am the only one who goes through this?

I hear you bro! Someone convinced me to try yoga and I was thinking….easy peasy. And dang was I wrong. Was hobbling about for 4 days! BUt yeah…variety in your workout routines is always good 🙂 Keeps you humble.

Glen, you are so not the only one! 🙂
It really happens to the best of us. Sometimes, I think it’s God’s way to remind us all that we are just humans, not machines. Ya?

The thing is, we are all creatures of habit. We build a workout regime, like it, stick to it and very seldom stray. Mainly becos most of us have a full-time job and a personal/family life to juggle as well.

But you are right. It is good to throw a wrench into the turning wheel once in a while just to keep things ‘exciting’, if you know what I mean.

For me, I just try to add variety to my regime. Other than the usual BC and BP classes, the occasional visit to the spinning studio helps keep things interesting. Butt never fails to hurt after the occasional RPM! Then, there is Power Jump – my latest love. Especially its super low impact on our legs as opposted to BodyStep. And the heart rate it kicks up…OMG!!!

Most folks I know advocate running but I find that super boring. Even with ipod or whatever device to keeps us entertained. It is still boring. Maybe I’m just a group exercise addict. 🙂

Ohhh mate, you’re certainly not the only one! Even mixing in BC hurts. I did a Halloween mix yesterday and the day before that and did 3 tracks from BC37 (4, 6, 10) and rest older stuff and I ache so much in my back, shoulder blades, shoulders, triceps, hamstrings and adductors….. Crazy how much it aches! Haha. I can barely kick due to the ache in the hamstrings.

You should do Balance, it’s very good for the muscles and a nice addition to everything!

hello Glen,,, i have just started to read your blog, and it’s very interesting, i’m from Mexico and i’m a BodyCombat and BodyPump instructor and you keep me informed about the latest releases before we get them here hehehehe so i must say THANKS! i already read your post about BC38 tracklist and i can’t wait for it, the songs looks awesome!

about your post here,,, i’m totally agree with you, doing something new definitively will hurt you… but like the others says variety makes the difference in your training, my experience is with the running just like you and with BodyBalance OMG!!! i did not know i had some muscles hehehe…

ok, so feel free to stay in touch,,,

Regards,,, and stay with the fight…

Thanks guys! Went for another run this morning, just a quick 4k as I’ve gotta teach tonight. Ever noticed that your muscles always hurt even more on the SECOND day! Ouch! 🙂

Appreciate all your feedback – good to know I’m not alone on this one. Great idea about the Halloween mix Andreas – may try that tomorrow!

i can totally relate to your situation. i used to do only bc and bjam for my workout regime. then i added rpm, gosh i didnt do any workout for few days after my 1st rpm. muscle sore here and there. =) that’s showed my body is so immune to my daily workout. good that you wanna spice up your workout regime. now that i’m so used to bc, bjam & rpm, thinking of adding b/balance. hee. maybe. =P
